Materials of Construction

Five alloys, and what each one is for.

Stainless Steel 316L

Fe 65 · Ni 12 · Cr 17 · Mo 2.5 · Mn 2.0 · Si 1.0

Suited toMost organic systems. The standard material for Indo reactors and vessels.

AvoidHalogen acids and salts; caustics above 100 °C.

Monel 400

Ni 66 · Cu 31.5 · Fe 1.2

Suited toCaustic solutions, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride and hydrofluoric acid.

AvoidNitric acid and ammonia; hydrochloric and sulfuric acids.

Hastelloy C-276

Ni 53 · Mo 16 · Cr 15.5 · Fe 6.5 · W 4.0 · Co 2.5 · Mn 1

Suited toWet chlorine and strong oxidisers. The broadest general corrosion resistance.

Inconel 600

Ni 76 · Cr 15.5 · Fe 8

Suited toCaustics and chlorides at high temperature and pressure with sulfur present.

AvoidCost often limits it to applications that need it.

Titanium

Commercially pure titanium

Suited toOxidising agents — nitric acid, aqua regia, mixed acids — and chloride ions.

AvoidBurns vigorously in oxygen at elevated temperature and pressure.

The user has to select the appropriate material of construction. Indo engineers will gladly discuss material options, but the final selection rests with the user. Ask an engineer →
